Background to ACET Uganda
ACET Uganda is an HIV and AIDS Non
Government Organisation that was established in 1990. It was a branch of
ACET UK, which was founded in 1988 by Patrick Dixon. Dr Patrick
Dixon, at the time was a medical Doctor working with the terminally ill
(Cancer etc). His encounter with an HIV and AIDS patient left a deep
mark on him. Seeing the patient locked away in an isolation room, with
minimal attention, Dr Dixon set his mind to get to know the patient
better. On his return he found an empty bed and inquired about the
patient, only to be told he had died. The lack of dignity, and isolation
that Dr Dixon observed in this individual’s case, prompted him to
resolve that ‘no one should be left to die in such a state’. He started
to mobilize a team of people to do exactly that – to restore dignity,
spend time and affirm the self worth of patients living with HIV and
AIDS.
